Nerone & Patuzzi “C4 105 TQ” Coffee Table in Black Belgian Marble for Gruppo NP2, Italy, 1971.
The “C4 105 TQ” coffee table, designed by Nerone Ceccarelli and Giovanni Patuzzi in 1971 for the NP2 Group, captures the fusion of art, architecture, and innovative material explorationm. Emerging from the vibrant experimentalism of Italy’s postmodern design movement, this coffee table embodies a period when creative collectives sought to blur the lines between disciplines, turning furniture into a medium of philosophical and spatial investigation.
Produced under the visionary label “Forme e Superfici”, the table features a dramatic black Belge marble top intricately etched with geometric patterns reminiscent of lithographic prints. These carved motifs are not mere decoration but deliberate sculptural gestures - playing with light and shadow to create a tactile language across the surface. The design evolves from flat, graphic planes into subtle three-dimensional reliefs, centered around an engraved “eye” motif and abstract geometries. The piece is supported by a cruciform metal base with refined bronze detailing. The carving technique echoes the NP2 Group’s pioneering work on monumental panels and modular architectural elements.
Established in the late 1960s as an extension of Milan’s “Forme e Superfici”, the NP2 Group emerged from the partnership of Nerone Ceccarelli and Giovanni Patuzzi, who first connected at Venice’s Accademia di Belle Arti under the mentorship of Carlo Scarpa. Their groundbreaking Rilievomarmo technique, patented in 1967, revolutionized marble by elevating it from a mere structural material to a dynamic medium of artistic expression. In the years that followed, sharing this same spirit of innovation and boundary-pushing, figures such as Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, and Gaetano Pesce spearheaded the Italian postmodern movement known as “Radical Design,” forever transforming the landscape of contemporary design.
