Afra & Tobia Scarpa “Bonanza” sofa for C&B, cognac leather, Italy, 1969
Designed in 1969, the Bonanza sofa is one of the most radical expressions of Afra & Tobia Scarpa’s exploration of form and material. The silhouette is defined by a continuous, padded loop: a thick tubular volume that bends inward at the ends, transforming structure into a single, enveloping gesture.
The cognac leather is left deliberately expressive, with soft gathers and natural creases that accentuate the sofa’s sculptural mass and tactile presence. Beneath the generous upholstery, a dark recessed base anchors the piece visually, sharpening the contrast between the supple exterior and the firm architectural core.
Bold, physical, and unmistakably late 1960s, the Bonanza sofa stands at the intersection of furniture and inhabitable form—an iconic statement of Italian experimental design.
