Afra & Tobia Scarpa “Bonanza” living room set for C&B, cognac leather, 1969, Italy, set of 3
Designed in 1969, the Bonanza set distills Afra & Tobia Scarpa’s approach into a bold dialogue between mass and softness. The sofa and two armchairs are formed by continuous, tubular volumes wrapped in cognac leather, folded into enveloping curves that emphasize tactility and presence.
The leather is intentionally allowed to gather and crease, reinforcing the sculptural, body-centered character of the design. A dark, recessed base anchors the generous upholstery, creating a sharp contrast between the supple exterior and the firm structural core beneath.
A radical yet controlled expression of late-1960s Italian design, Bonanza stands as a defining example of the Scarpas’ ability to merge architectural rigor with material sensuality.
