Sergio Rodrigues "Lucio Costa" Dining Chairs for Oca, 1956, Set of 6

Description

Sergio Rodrigues "Lucio Costa" dining chairs for Oca, wood and Vienna straw, Brazil, 1956, set of six.

Sergio Rodrigues designed the "Lúcio Costa" dining chair in 1956 for Oca, the Rio de Janeiro company he had founded the year before as a laboratory for a distinctly Brazilian language of modern furniture. The frame is built in wood, with slender raked legs braced by stretchers and a floating back rail that meets the uprights through exposed rounded pegs, a detail that reads as both joinery and ornament. The woven cane seat sits within a shaped wooden surround, its open mesh lightening a structure that is otherwise grounded and deliberate.
What distinguishes this dining chair is the balance between the weight of the timber and the airiness of the caning, a contrast Rodrigues handled with restraint. The curved back panel follows the line of the shoulders, while the visible pegged construction speaks to a piece made to be understood as much as used. Produced in Brazil in 1956, it belongs to the family of early caned chairs through which Rodrigues established the vocabulary that would define Oca in this period.
