Carved from a single massive slab of black-stained wood, this banquette combines a raw, organic silhouette with a deliberate sculptural gesture. One end rises into an integrated block, its edges softened and rounded into a subtle headrest, while the opposite end follows a wavy, irregular line that leaves the natural movement of the trunk visible along the edge. The slab rests on two simple rectangular supports set beneath it, their straight geometry set against the fluid contour of the top. Chisel marks and the texture of the material remain legible across the surface, underscoring the piece's handcrafted origin.
Furniture of this kind belongs to a strand of French design from the 1960s that treated wood less as a material to be refined than as a mass to be shaped, echoing the period's broader interest in archaic and primitive forms alongside more industrial design languages.
