Paolo Buffa Rationalist Daybed for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, 1952

Description

Paolo Buffa Daybed for La Permanente Mobili Cantù, wood, Italy, 1952

Designed in 1952 by Paolo Buffa and produced by La Permanente Mobili Cantù, this daybed reflects the refined balance that defines Buffa’s work in the early 1950s.

The structure is formed by two inclined solid wood sides with a warm finish, set on tapered legs. The long upholstered mattress sits neatly within the frame and is paired with two cylindrical bolsters, softening the geometry without interrupting its order.

Buffa’s approach is evident in the proportions: the wooden sides frame the seat with clarity, while the slight inclination introduces movement to an otherwise composed silhouette. The piece carries the quiet elegance typical of his production, where tradition and modern restraint coexist.

Paolo Buffa (1903–1970) was one of the leading figures of mid-century Italian design, working alongside contemporaries such as Gio Ponti while maintaining a distinctive sensitivity to proportion and material.
