Pierre Chapo “S24” Dining Chairs, 1967, Set of 6

Description

Pierre Chapo “S24” dining chairs for Atelier Pierre Chapo, elm and leather, France, 1966, set of six.

Pierre Chapo designed the “S24” dining chairs for his friend, Dr. Hiroshi Nakajima. These chairs reflect Chapo’s inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright’s balanced lines, Le Corbusier’s research on proportions, and Bauhaus design principles. Crafted from elm wood and natural cognac leather, these chairs feature a seamless blend of materials and craftsmanship.
The natural cognac leather wraps around the elm structure, secured with rounded-head rivets on the apron, backrest, and joint connections. The flat plank legs are positioned laterally, while a single-piece leg supports the backrest, highlighting the chair’s minimalist design. The S24 chairs emphasize the strength of half-lap corner joints, ensuring rigidity in their streamlined form.
Pierre Chapo’s design philosophy focused on the beauty of visible joinery and the integrity of materials. The “S24” chairs, with their simple yet robust construction, embody this ethos.
