Paolo Buffa Armchair for Serafino Arrighi, 1952

Description

Paolo Buffa armchair for Serafino Arrighi, walnut and rush, Italy, 1952

A Paolo Buffa armchair in walnut and rush, Italy, 1952. The tall ladder back is defined by three horizontal rails with an undulating, wave-cut profile — a decorative gesture reminiscent of the sculptural furniture language explored by Ico Parisi and Osvaldo Borsani in the same period. The arm supports are shaped into open teardrop forms, adding a lightness to the frame that recalls the artisanal refinement of Italian mid-century design at its most inventive. Turned finials crown the back posts; turned legs are joined by a plain H-stretcher below. The original rush seat retains its woven herringbone pattern and natural patina throughout — a material warmth characteristic of the best Italian craft production of the 1950s.
