Mario Bellini “Pianura” armchairs for Cassina, argilla velvet and wood, Italy, 1971, set of two.
The “Pianura” living room set is a great expression of the minimalism and elegance of Mario Bellini’s creations. This modular sofa was presented in 1972, just a couple of years after launching the iconic “Camaleonda” and the same year of “Le Mura”. With this particular model, Bellini develops some unconventional features. The name “Pianura” in Italian means “flatland” and recalls, in fact, the smooth lines of this piece. The sofa/chairs/set looks warm and comfortable thanks to the combination of the materials and design. The structure is made of Italian walnut, resting on four spherical gum feet. The large and flat armrests dialogue with the slightly curved backrest and the seat, creating an elegant and timeless design. The dynamism of the piece is created by some specific details. The large and flat armrests give a particular vibration jointing the backseat and slightly overpassing it. The backrest is conceived in three different pieces, one single horizontal element on top and two vertical elements with a slit in the middle, creating a vibrant game also with the different wooden grain on the back.
