Marco Zanuso “Regent” Sofa for Arflex, 1960

Description

Marco Zanuso “Regent” Sofa for Arflex, Italy, 1960.

In the realm of luxury design, few pieces evoke the essence of mid-century Italian style as eloquently as the “Regent” sofa, crafted by the renowned designer Marco Zanuso for Arflex in the 1960s. This mix of tight back Knole style, has been a staple in the world of high-end furniture, gracing the interiors with its sage-colored velvet cushioning. The sofa features a high backrest and deep seat in matching tones, providing both comfort and refined aesthetics.
Considered one of the fathers of Italian industrial design together with Studio BBPR, Franco Albini, and Gio Ponti, Zanuso’s design balances strong geometric forms with a sense of lightness, achieved through the use of elevated, slender legs in dark wood, which taper delicately to rounded feet made of wood, offering both stability and a subtle material contrast. The sofa belongs to the first edition of “Regent”, visible by the use of circular wooden feet – though the later editions show iron feet. These thoughtful details reflect Zanuso’s philosophy of combining function with visual impact, making these armchairs a standout piece in classy interior settings.
