Description

Luigi Fontana “4605/M” Sconce for Fontana Arte, Glass and brass, Italy, 1950s

The “4605/M” was designed by Luigi Fontana and produced by Fontana Arte in the 1950s — a moment when the Milan-based manufacturer was at the height of its influence, setting the terms for what refined domestic lighting could be. The design is built around a single formal idea: a curved opaline glass diffuser, cut at an asymmetric diagonal, threaded onto a slender brass bar and held in place by knurled thumb screws. Nothing is added beyond what the logic of the object requires.
The glass is the piece. Unlit, it reads as almost architectural — a plane held in controlled tension against the vertical spine of the brass. When lit, it becomes something else entirely: the opaline diffuses the source completely, releasing a warm, even luminosity that spreads into the wall with no hard edge. The shadow cast by the brass bar, bisecting the illuminated surface, is not incidental — it is the composition.
