Kazuhide Takahama Three-seater Sofa for Simon Gavina, Natural Leather, 1965

Description

Kazuhide Takahama three-seater sofa for Simon Gavina, natural leather, Italy, 1965

A study in proportion and restraint.
Designed in 1965 by Kazuhide Takahama for Simon Gavina, this three-seater sofa distills the architect’s design philosophy into its purest form — a modular body held within a structural exoskeleton of brushed steel.

The upholstery, in buttery beige leather, softens the precision of the frame while preserving its architectural rigor. The horizontal steel belt that encircles the sofa defines its geometry, creating a visual rhythm that recalls Takahama’s architectural roots and his fascination with minimal construction.

Far from ornament, every junction is deliberate — the exposed bolts, the folded metal legs, the seamless volumes. This dialogue between softness and structure places the sofa within the same lineage as Carlo Scarpa, Franco Albini, and Angelo Mangiarotti — designers who, like Takahama, viewed furniture as architecture on a human scale.

A rare and timeless example of Italian modernism, where precision meets serenity.
