Guglielmo Ulrich wall mounted console for S.A.F.F.A. Milano, wood, Italy, 1960s
This wall-mounted console by Guglielmo Ulrich floats clear of the wall on a pair of angled brackets, its slim top raised at the back by a low gallery rail. The rail is built from one horizontal members locked into three uprights, and every connection is made with an exposed wedged through-tenon that serves as structure and ornament at once. Beneath the top run paired drawers, opened by shaped finger pulls cut directly into the fronts rather than added as hardware. The joinery is left visible throughout, keeping the maker's hand at the center of the piece.
Executed in solid wood for S.A.F.F.A. Milano, this wall-mounted console belongs to a craft-driven strand of Italian mid-century cabinetmaking in which honest construction takes the place of applied decoration, made in Italy in the 1960s. Its compact footprint suits an entry, a bedside, or a study, where the drawers hold small objects and the raised rail keeps the surface in order. The result is a quiet, architectural object that earns its presence through proportion and joinery rather than through surface effect.
