Gio Ponti Modernist Side Table, Italy, 1940s, Attributed

Description

Gio Ponti modernist side table, walnut, glass and brass, Italy, 1940s, attributed

Round two-tier side table in walnut with a glass top, consciously attributed to Gio Ponti, Italy, circa 1940s. The circular top sits within a raised walnut rim and is fitted with a thin glass protective surface. Below, a second shelf of the same circular form is supported by four tapering legs, each terminating in a squared brass sabot. The legs are sculpted with a flat, blade-like profile on the outer face, a formal detail found consistently in Ponti’s furniture production of the period.
The combination of walnut, brass sabots and the two-tier structure is characteristic of Italian residential furniture of the late 1930s and 1940s, and closely related to documented Ponti production from the same years. The piece retains its original patina throughout, with natural signs of age on both wood and brass.
