Gio Ponti 646 “Leggera” Dining Chairs for Cassina, 1952, Set of 8

Description

Gio Ponti 646 “Leggera” dining chairs for Cassina, blue velvet, Italy, 1952, set of eight

The 646 “Leggera” is one of Gio Ponti’s most enduring chair designs—an icon defined by Cassina’s refined woodworking and a silhouette that updates the poised lightness of the traditional Chiavari chair. Slender legs, crisp rails, and perfectly judged proportions make it feel almost weightless, while this blue velvet upholstery brings a richer, more contemporary note, adding softness and depth without altering the chair’s disciplined elegance.

Italian architect and longtime founder and director of Domus, Gio Ponti (1891–1979) is remembered for his attention to surfaces and his pursuit of simplicity in the relationship between structure and form. From the beginning of his career, Ponti’s work pushed beyond the early twentieth-century return to neoclassicism, positioning the architect as a cultural advocate and a sharp interpreter of modern bourgeois taste.
