Borek Sipek ”Prosim Sedni” / “Papillon Chair” armchairs for Driade, wood, leather and brocade, Italy, 1987, set of two.
Emerging from the creative mind of Sipek in 1987, Papillon/Prosim Sedni for Driade are rare and iconic pieces that invite you to explore the playful dance between tradition and innovation. At first glance, it presents itself as a classic armchair swathed in luxurious black leather. But a closer look reveals its true potential – a mesmerizing transformation into a sinuous armchair.
The backrest unfolds, not unlike a butterfly emerging from its chrysalis, crafted from an elegant fabric of brocade in an elegant shade of purple. This unexpected metamorphosis transforms the piece into a sinuous chair, offering a wholly new experience.
Cherry wood legs, each with the playful quirk of a matchstick, support the armrests. A contrasting symphony of black lacquered tapered legs – two in the back, one at the front – anchors the piece. These black legs hint at a dynamic potential, a design with a peculiar readiness to shift and adapt, adding a layer of intrigue to the overall design.
Sipek’s artistry extends beyond the form itself. His journey as a designer is one of exploration, weaving between Eastern and Western influences. In 1983, he established his design studio in Amsterdam, a crucible where these diverse influences coalesced. It was during this period that his fruitful collaboration with Driade began, birthing a collection of furniture, objects, and ideas that continue to captivate with their originality.
