Alberto Rosselli “Confidential” Modular Sofa for Saporiti, black leather, Italy, 1972
Alberto Rosselli designed this model for Saporiti in 1972. One of the first modular sofas ever produced for private homes, the Confidential makes the connection between backrest and seat into a visible formal element — the interlocking cushions that join the modules are not incidental, they define the character of the piece.
Each module is built around deep, enveloping volumes that sit low to the ground, creating a sense of horizontal mass without heaviness. The junctions between elements read as deliberate sculptural decisions rather than structural necessities, giving the composition a rhythm that changes depending on the configuration. In the three-seater, that rhythm becomes particularly clear — volume, pause, volume.
Rosselli co-founded Studio Ponti-Fornaroli-Rosselli alongside Gio Ponti and was among the first Italian designers to bring an ergonomic sensibility to residential furniture. The Confidential is the most direct expression of that approach: a sofa that is genuinely comfortable and genuinely designed at the same time.
