Afra & Tobia Scarpa “Artona” coffee table for Maxalto, iron and verneer burl, Italy, 1977.
The table’s support structure comprises slender cylindrical columns of different types of wood, organized in a square grid and fastened to the base using a plate with holes in which they are inserted. The attachment to the top makes the end of each piece of solid wood emerge from the surface above; the circular imprints obtained, with their different tones, further enrich the design.
The table is based above all on the formal use of shaped layered elements on all sides for the borders of the tops. It is characterized by an inner polygonal edge that represents the line of separation between the finish of the top, in briar or black resin, and the border elements.
