Totemic Wooden Sculpture, Italy, 1990s

A fan-shaped panel with a deep V profile, made of joined planks, opens like a flower or a shield above a slender stem. At its centre sits a round medallion carved with a wavy line, softly outlined in red, which draws the eye like a small sun or a calm sea. The dark, carved surface shows its grain clearly, and the edges curl gently upward at the top, giving the panel a graceful, winged outline. A turned, circular base in warm brown wood grounds the composition, and the fine stem lets the large form seem to float. From the side, the panel appears as a broad, curved blade, and the medallion is cut into the wood with a gently raised edge.
