Robert Mathieu Modernist Floor Lamp, brass and parchment paper, France, 1955.
Designed in 1955 by Robert Mathieu, this floor lamp reflects the clarity and refinement of French modernist lighting in the mid-1950s. A slender brass stem rises from a weighted circular base and extends into a gently angled arm, supporting the distinctive double-cone shade.
The fabric shade, finished with a subtle trim, diffuses a warm and intimate light. The central brass joint becomes a quiet focal point, marking the transition between the two volumes and revealing Mathieu’s attention to proportion and detail.
Active in postwar France, Robert Mathieu developed a highly personal language within modern lighting, often mentioned alongside figures such as Serge Mouille and Pierre Guariche. His work is characterized by restraint, elegance, and thoughtful construction rather than overt gesture.
