Pierre Chapo T21B "Sfax" table & "S28" chairs for Atelier Pierre Chapo, wood, France, 1970s.

A remarkable study in structural harmony, this dining set by Pierre Chapo pairs the T21B "Sfax" table with six "S28" chairs. Carved from solid elm, the set is a dialogue of powerful geometries. The T21B is anchored by its three iconic converging legs, a feat of angular precision, while the chairs provide a dynamic counterpoint with their slender, splayed legs.

The "S28" chairs are masterpieces of rational construction. Each features a distinctive trapezoidal backrest and a solid seat, held together by Chapo’s signature ‘assemblage’ technique. In this radical honesty, the visible joinery becomes the ornament. This pursuit of harmony, often guided by the golden ratio, creates a balance that feels both mathematical and intuitive.

Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) remains a pivotal figure in postwar French design, merging the structural intelligence of Jean Prouvé with the organic warmth of Charlotte Perriand. This set embodies that duality—at once rational and poetic. It stands as a holistic masterpiece of modern craftsmanship and a defining icon of French mid-century design.
