Pier Luigi Colli Dining Table, Wood, Italy, 1950s

This dining table is built on a pair of tapered trestle legs joined by a single stretcher with a gently scalloped lower edge, its ends locked into the uprights with visible wedge-key tenons left proud of the surface. A drawer sits centered beneath the top, opening on a single turned wood knob and finished with cut dovetail joints at the corners, a detail carried through in the drawer box itself rather than concealed. The rectangular top shows a strong, active grain figure that reads almost as a topographic pattern across the surface, and the whole piece carries a warm, deepened wood tone consistent with age and handling.

Pier Luigi Colli, born in Turin in 1895 and trained at the École des Beaux-Arts Décoratifs in Paris, returned to his native city to lead the family furniture workshop, producing pieces that moved between architectural rigor and a more artisanal, hand-worked language. The exposed joinery on this table, particularly the through-wedged tenons at the leg tops, points to that same interest in construction as ornament, where the mechanics of the piece are left legible rather than hidden beneath the surface. The result is a table designed by Pier Luigi Colli for everyday use as much as for display, its structure doing as much visual work as its materials.
