Pier Luigi Colli dining chairs for Colli, wood and velvet, Italy, 1940, set of six.

This set of dining chairs by Pier Luigi Colli is built with a slender, upright profile in solid wood, each chair's tapered legs meeting a low stretcher on either side for structural support. The back is formed by a rectangular upholstered panel set within the wood frame, echoed below by a boxed seat cushion with corner pleats gathered neatly around the rear uprights. The joinery is left exposed rather than concealed, consistent with the restrained, architectural language typical of Colli's workshop production. The chairs are upholstered in velvet.

Pier Luigi Colli was an architect and designer active in Turin from the 1920s, working alongside figures including Gio Ponti, Emilio Lancia, and Luigi Vietti before developing an independent practice through the following decades. His furniture is characterized by disciplined geometry and careful proportion rather than applied decoration, qualities visible here in the chairs' clean vertical lines and precise construction.
