Paavo Tynell shaped some of the most recognizable Finnish lighting of the twentieth century, and this floor lamp carries the vocabulary he is known for. It is a floor lamp produced in brass for Idman, with a slender stem that rises from a weighted circular base and bends forward at the top to carry the shade. The central section of the stem is wrapped in cane, a detail Tynell used to soften the metal and to give the hand a natural place to adjust the light.
The curved neck lets the shade tilt toward the reader or the room, and the pleated fabric shade diffuses the light evenly while keeping the warmth of the period. The brass has aged into a quiet patina that reads as genuine age rather than restoration, and the proportions stay light enough to sit beside a chair without dominating it.
