Marco Zanuso "Regent" armchairs for Arflex, sage green velvet, Italy, 1960, set of two.
The "Regent" armchairs, designed by Marco Zanuso for Arflex in 1960s, capture the essence of mid-century Italian high-end design. These armchairs, upholstered in sage velvet, feature a high, angular backrest and deep, comfortable seat cushions that echo elegance, enhancing the lines of Italian modernism. Also, the winged armrests reinterpret the classic Knole style, lending a distinctive aristocratic flair to the design. Considered one of the fathers of Italian industrial design together with Studio BBPR, Franco Albini, and Gio Ponti, Zanuso's design balances strong geometric forms with a sense of lightness, achieved through the use of elevated, slender legs in dark wood, which taper delicately to rounded feet made of wood, offering both stability and a subtle material contrast. The two chairs belong to the first edition of "Regent", visible by the use of circular wooden feet – though the later editions show iron feet. These thoughtful details reflect Zanuso's philosophy of combining function with visual impact, making these armchairs a standout piece in classy interior settings.
