Jacques Adnet Style Art Deco Round Table, 1930s
Dimensions
Jacques Adnet style Art Deco dining round table, walnut, France, 1930s.
This French round table in the style of Jacques Adnet was made in walnut in the 1930s. The top is veneered in radiating sections laid around a central point, so the figure of the grain opens like a star across the whole surface. It rests on a cylindrical column wrapped in a continuous, strongly figured veneer, which sits on a stepped molded collar. The column stands on a platform base with concave sides and four projecting corners, each ending in a small recessed plinth foot. A fine brass fillet runs along the upper edge of the base and around the feet, adding a measured line of metal to an otherwise sober composition. The massing is architectural, closer to a column on a stylobate than to a conventional table, and recalls the restrained neoclassical vocabulary that French designers of the decade, Adnet among them, brought into Art Deco interiors. The surface carries an aged patina, with the natural variations of the veneer and the marks of long use visible on top and base.
