J. Van Loo Art Deco Round Side Table, iron and marble, Belgium, 1930s.
This Art Deco side table in wrought iron and marble was made in Belgium in the 1930s. Four broad iron straps are bent into elongated loops, each rising to the underside of a circular apron and curling outward at the foot into a small scroll that rests on a rounded ball. A flat iron ring sits between the legs near the floor, joined to each scroll by a small knuckle, which gives the base its lightness and its strict radial symmetry. The metalwork is clearly handmade. The straps are worked with rows of punched dots along their edges, and the apron is chiseled with vertical flutes and fixed with domed rivets. A thin steel rim holds the marble in place. The top is a brecciated marble, with angular fragments set in a dense matrix and finished with a molded edge, so the pattern reads like a map of broken stone. The iron has a natural, uneven patina, and a stamped mark appears on the underside of one leg. Art Deco side table with looped hammered iron legs and marble top, 1930s.
