Italian modernist wall lights in brass and opaline glass, 1950s, set of two.

A pair of wall lights built around a single flat bar of brass, its rectangular profile running the full height of each fixture and mounted directly to the wall as the structural spine of the design. Set diagonally across the bar is a panel of opaline glass, cut to an angular silhouette with softened corners, held in place by knurled brass screws left visible rather than hidden beneath the glass. Lit, the opaline surface turns into a broad, even wash of warmth, while the brass bar traces a thin, precise shadow above and below the panel, so each fixture reads almost as much for what it withholds as for what it lights.

The pair belongs to a moment in Italian lighting when designers were trading ornament for structure, letting the mechanics of a fixture, its screws, its seams, its supporting armature, sit in plain view as part of the composition rather than as something to conceal. That instinct shows here in the plain honesty of the brass bar and the way the glass sits off-square against it, a controlled bit of tension between a rigid line and an angled plane. Wall lights of this kind were conceived for the wall as much as for the room, their glow and their shadow treated as a single gesture.
