This pair of nightstands by Guglielmo Ulrich raises a slim top above four tapered legs, each one capped at the back by a low gallery rail set on short uprights and held by exposed wedged tenons that read as structure and as detail at once. A single drawer sits beneath the top, its corners joined with hand-cut dovetails left visible at the sides and fronted by a finger pull cut directly into the wood rather than added as hardware. The construction is kept honest throughout, with every joint shown rather than concealed.
Executed in wood for S.A.F.F.A. Milano, this pair of nightstands belongs to a craft-driven approach to Italian mid-century cabinetmaking in which exposed joinery takes the place of applied decoration, made in Italy in the 1960s. The compact proportions suit a bedside, where the raised rail frames the surface and the drawer holds small objects within reach.
