Carlo Scarpa "761" square table for Bernini, wood, Italy, 1978.

Designed in 1978 by Carlo Scarpa for Bernini, the model 761 square table reflects the architect’s late and most distilled phase. The composition is direct and balanced: a square top with a layered edge rests on four legs formed by paired solid wood elements, creating a measured rhythm beneath the surface.

The proportions are deliberate. The thickness of the top, the depth of the edge, and the geometry of the legs work together in quiet equilibrium. The natural grain becomes part of the design, emphasizing the dialogue between planes and vertical supports.

In its rigorous use of wood and volumetric presence, the table resonates with the research carried out in the same decade by Afra & Tobia Scarpa in the Artona series for Maxalto, as well as with the structural monumentality later expressed in Mario Bellini’s La Basilica table for Cassina. Within this context, the 761 stands as one of the most refined interpretations of late Italian modern design.
