Cubist Abstract Wooden Sculpture, Italy, 1990s.

Two rounded halves, close to a shield or a mask, meet along a central seam topped by a small stepped motif. The surface has a warm, varied patina, and the colour moves from honey to dark brown across the planks. At the centre, a small relief of stepped geometric lines links the two sides, and the sculpture stands on a turned, circular base. Bertolotto, an Italian maker active in the 1990s, let the history of his wood show, and the variations of tone are part of the character of the piece.
