Brutalist Architectural Wooden Sculpture, Italy, 1970s.

A narrow tower in dense, weathered timber is capped by a rounded top pierced by two openings. A grille of small rods is set into the upper face, like a window in a fortified wall. The lower body is left as a solid block, with deep grain, splits and wear that show how much age the wood carries. The profile leans slightly, which gives the tower a human quality. Bertolotto often built with wood salvaged from old furniture and planks, and in this Italian work of the 1970s the weight of the material is allowed to speak without ornament.
