Vico Magistretti “122” Dining Chairs for Cassina, 1967, Set of 8

Description

Vico Magistretti for Cassina “122” dining chairs for Cassina, brown leather, beech and plywood, Italy, 1967, set of eight.

The “122” chairs designed by Vico Magistretti in 1967 have a sculptural design, created with a wooden structure, plywood shells, and semi-cylindrical section legs that permit the chairs to be stacked to reduce their size and be easily moved. This feature was a significant innovation for the ’60s. Like the plywood seat, the slightly concave backrest connects seamlessly to the vertical uprights that rise in a spiral direction. Explicitly recalling the earlier model “121” designed by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Cassina, in the Magistretti chairs the backrest has a fork shape that evokes the flexibility of the back support. The seats are covered with the original tan leather, showing a consistent patina.
