Sergio Rodrigues “Tonico” Lounge Chairs for Meia Pataca, 1963, Set of 2
Designed in 1963 for Meia Pataca, the “Tonico” is Sergio Rodrigues at his most direct: a low wooden rig that puts structure on display and lets the leather do the talking.
The frame is built from stacked rails and squared uprights, tightened with exposed hardware—almost like a piece of crafted equipment rather than a “soft” lounge chair. Inside that clean geometry, the upholstery arrives in bold blocks: a deep red seat cushion, a large ivory cylindrical back roll, and an oversized tan headrest that sits on top like a saddle. Everything is held in place by perforated leather straps with visible stitching, rising to dark spherical finials that crown the posts and give the profile its unmistakable rhythm.
