Sculptural Low Table in Dark Carved Wood, France, 1960s

Description

Sculptural Low Table in Dark Carved Wood, France, 1960s

The surface speaks immediately. Light settles into a field of softly carved circular hollows, turning the dark wood into a textured landscape rather than a flat top. The pattern is regular but never rigid—each depression catching shadow at a slightly different depth, giving the table a quiet, shifting presence as you move around it.

One corner drifts into a smooth, untouched plane, allowing the carved rhythm to fade rather than stop. Along the edge, the profile subtly follows the carving, creating a gentle undulation that reveals the thickness of the slab without heaviness. The grain remains visible beneath the tool marks, warm and dense, grounding the piece in its material.

Set low on two recessed block legs, the table hovers just above the floor, composed and deliberate. The focus is entirely on surface, depth, and tactility—an approach that echoes the experimental, material-driven research seen in the work of Pierre Chapo, the sculptural rigor of Charlotte Perriand’s later wood pieces, and the expressive carving explored by Alexandre Noll.
