Philippe Starck “Costes” dining chairs for Driade, leather, plywood and steel, Italy, 1984, Set of 10.
There are objects universally recognized as icons. Costes easy chair that, in 1984, marked the beginning of the partnership between Philippe Starck and Driade such as the consecration of the designer, formerly unknown in Italy, is one of these objects. Designed for the homonymous, now disappeared, Parisian café, owes its timeless success to the absoluteness of forms: a dark wooden embracing structure with three highly tilted legs. The famous Costes armchair by Philippe Starck is offered to us in a new version with different wood essences. Costes is an armchair which, in 1984, marked the beginning of the collaboration between the child prodigy Philippe Starck and Driade, as well as his official entry into the Olympus of design. With its simple style, the enveloping wooden shell and the three metal legs, Costes immediately established itself as an icon of 20th century design, sold in millions of copies, copied many times and present in any contemporary design collection. Costes now exists in two versions: the original one with mahogany body and this new one with different essences. They all have a fixed seat cushion in polyurethane covered in black or light leather and legs in black painted steel tube.
