Mario Marenco & Antonella Scarpitta “830” chairs for Mobil Girgi, Cognac leather, Italy, 1980s, set of four.
The “830” dining chairs by Mario Marenco and Antonella Scarpitta for Mobil Girgi, designed in 1980, showcase exceptional craftsmanship and innovative design. The front legs are crafted from a single curved piece of beechwood, an advanced technique reminiscent of Thonet’s woodworking mastery. This seamless construction creates a continuous flow from the legs to the arched connector and seat support, emphasizing visual fluidity. With a clear recall of the minimalistic design of Afra & Tobia Scarpa design, the backrest is a single wave-shaped wooden board veneered in walnut with visible vertical grain patterns that enhance the natural beauty of the material. The seat, upholstered in its original cognac leather, features tone-on-tone stitching, adding subtle texture while highlighting the precision of the design.
The combination of three materials - beechwood, walnut veneer, and leather - creates a sophisticated interplay of textures. Well-known for the design of “Sapporo” chairs, Marenco conceived the chairs’ refined proportions and thoughtful use of materials demonstrating a deep understanding of both form and function. Each chair remains in excellent original condition, with only minor signs of wear that attest to their age and authenticity.
