Gianfranco Frattini “Sesann” Sofa for Cassina, cognac leather, Italy, 1969
Designed in 1969 by Gianfranco Frattini, the Sesann collection marked a turning point in upholstered furniture, combining informal comfort with a distinctly architectural presence. The sofa is defined by its generous, organic cushions, embraced and contained by a bold chromed steel frame that both supports and accentuates the softness of the volumes.
Its low and inviting profile reflects the spirit of Italian design in the 1970s, echoing the radical aesthetics explored by contemporaries such as Mario Bellini and Afra & Tobia Scarpa. The Sesann became an icon of convivial living, where design meets comfort and sculptural form.
Gianfranco Frattini (1926–2004) was a key figure of Italian modern design. A protégé of Gio Ponti, he collaborated with Cassina, Artemide, and Bernini, producing furniture and lighting that bridged rigorous architectural logic with a refined sense of materiality. His work remains celebrated for its timeless elegance and innovative use of structure and detail.
