The Friedman armchair and ottoman, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, reflect his iconic Usonian principles of simplicity, functionality, and harmony with nature. Upholstered in red leather, the chair and ottoman feature a natural American cherry wood frame with visible grain, finished in clear varnish. The chair’s wing-like geometries, rear leg design, and vertical cross-rails are architectural in nature, echoing Wright’s approach of integrating furniture with the overall structure of the home.
Originally designed for Usonian homes, specifically the Friedman House, commissioned by Cecelia and Alvin Friedman in Pleasantville, New York, and built in 1948, this chair and ottoman embody Wright’s vision of affordable, stylish, and functional furniture. The short armrests, paired with fan-like elements, create a distinctive design, merging aesthetics with comfort. Wright’s goal was to ensure that every piece of furniture was an extension of the architecture itself.
This particular armchair and ottoman set were part of a limited edition produced by Cassina under strict guidelines from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation in 1986. In 1971, representatives from Cassina visited Frank Lloyd Wright’s Taliesin West to request a license to produce his furniture designs. Although no agreement was reached initially, in 1986, the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation contacted Atelier International, Cassina’s exclusive agent, to authorize the production. The collection remains highly collectible, representing the architectural genius of Wright and his enduring impact on modern American design. This set exemplifies his philosophy that furniture should contribute to the cohesive aesthetic and practical experience of the home.
