Frank Lloyd Wright “Coonley 2” dining chairs for Cassina, wood and leather, Italy, 1907, set of eight.
“Geometrically strict, frantically indulgent.” Frank Lloyd Wright designed the “Coonley 2” dining chairs for Cassina in 1907, inspiring the American Art Deco style. These chairs were created for the Avery Coonley House, an elaborate Prairie-style residence that marked Wright’s first use of “zoned planning,” a concept he continued throughout his career.
The “Coonley 2” chairs feature narrow vertical spindles connected to a broad crest rail extending to the bottom of the rear legs. The chairs have all-around geometric moldings reminiscent of Hellenistic triglyphs and columns. The legs are square and slightly curved at the bottom, adding a subtle elegance to the design. When placed around a table, the tall backs of the chairs create a “room within a room,” or technically, the Droste effect, enhancing the dining area’s movement.
