Charlotte Perriand “Le Courbolay” Cupboard for Atelier Jean Prouvè, 1958

Description

Charlotte Perriand cupboard from the building “Le Courbolay” for Fabrications Ateliers Jean Prouvè, mahogany and lacquering, France, 1958.

This Charlotte Perriand cupboard is characterized by a smooth rectangular shape with elegant proportions and particular details, in the typical Perriand style. The cabinet was originally conceived in 1958 as part of the furnishings of one of the apartments of the “Le Courbolay” building, located in Le Mans, France. This wardrobe is an original piece sourced from that building. The cupboard is conceived as an apparently simple project. It develops a mahogany structure with handles, in which the sliding plywood panels are inserted. The front sliding doors are white lacquered, with a chromatic contrast that enhances the smooth lines of the object. The inner part is composed of two symmetric shelves in mahogany, recalling the external finishing. The cupboard was entirely handmade at Fabrications Ateliers Jean Prouvè, including the doors decoration.
