Carlo Scarpa “761” Table & 1934 “765” Chairs, Dining Room Set for Bernini, 1934

Description

Carlo Scarpa “761” Table & 1934 “765” Chairs, Dining Set for Bernini, wood and leather, Italy.

The model 761 square table by Carlo Scarpa reflects the architect’s refined approach to proportion, structure, and material. The design is defined by a thick square top resting on four legs composed of paired solid wood elements, creating a rhythmic architectural structure beneath the surface.

The accompanying model 765 dining chairs were originally designed by Scarpa in 1934 for his Venetian home and later produced by Bernini in the 1970s. The chairs combine a rigorous right-angled wooden base with a gently curved backrest, distinguished by the characteristic vertical opening that widens toward the lower section.

Scarpa’s furniture translates his architectural language into domestic scale, where craftsmanship, proportion, and structure become central elements of the design. Within the landscape of Italian modern design, this research resonates with the structural clarity explored by Afra Scarpa and Tobia Scarpa for Maxalto, as well as with the monumental approach later seen in works by Mario Bellini.
