Description

Angelo Lelii 12628 “Siluro” Floor Lamp for Arredoluce, plexiglass and metal, Italy, 1957

Designed by Angelo Lelii in 1957 for Arredoluce, the 12628 “Siluro” floor lamp is an iconic example of Italian lighting design at its most visionary. The structure consists of a dynamic interplay between tension and balance: a series of thin metal rods rise from a circular base to enclose a suspended glass diffuser, which emits a soft, ambient glow. The name “Siluro”—Italian for torpedo—echoes the elongated, aerodynamic profile of the light source, seemingly levitating within its metal cage.
The yellow opaline glass shade, shaped like a delicate lens, enhances the sculptural presence of the piece, while the brass detailing adds warmth and contrast. As with many of Lelii’s creations, the “Siluro” fuses technical ingenuity with poetic form, bridging the rationalist legacy of postwar Italy with a futuristic aesthetic that anticipates the 1960s.
This lamp, though difficult to compare, can be seen alongside the works of Gino Sarfatti and Vittoriano Viganò: it demonstrates how lighting can transcend function to become spatial and symbolic. Lelii’s “Siluro” stands as one of his most rare and refined designs, an arresting presence in any interior.
