Afra & Tobia Scarpa “TL59” Dining Table for Poggi, Italy, 1975
Designed in 1975 by Afra & Tobia Scarpa for Poggi, the TL59 dining table reflects the duo’s mature phase, where structure, proportion and material become inseparable. The composition is defined by a smoked glass top resting on two sculptural metal bases, each formed by a folded, continuous surface that curves seamlessly into a circular foot.
The bases, finished in a warm bronze tone, create a strong architectural presence while maintaining visual lightness. Their soft, rounded transitions contrast with the sharp geometry of the rectangular glass top, generating a refined tension between mass and transparency.
This project belongs to the same decade as the Scarpa’s research for Maxalto and the Artona series, where solid volumes and material depth were central themes. Here, however, the dialogue shifts toward metal and glass, anticipating the more radical formal investigations that would characterize late 1970s Italian design.
Afra & Tobia Scarpa remain among the most influential figures in postwar Italian design, bridging craftsmanship and industrial precision. The TL59 stands as a powerful example of their ability to combine sculptural clarity with functional rigor.
