Mario Bellini “Le Mura” Modular Sofa for Cassina, 1972, Set of five.
Mario Bellini designed “Le Mura” modular sofa for Cassina in 1972, creating an iconic piece of industrial design. Bellini conceived this sectional couch featuring an architectural shape with smooth lines, merging creativity and innovation. Resembling monolithic stone blocks, the design reflects a timeless, strong personality sofa. Modular by nature, “Le Mura” offers dynamic flexibility, creating adaptable seating configurations for various spaces. The structure is made of polyurethane foam modules on an ABS base. This specific combination showcases patinated cognac leather upholstery, original of the age. The metal buckles, explicitly visible in the two corner elements, enhance the distinctive identity of the sofa. Nevertheless, “Le Mura” can be considered the natural and minimalistic evolution of Bellini’s idea of strong-personality design, after creating the iconic “Camaleonda” sofa in 1971, as well as the “CAB” dining chairs later in 1977, confirming once again constant attention to proportion, ergonomics, and elegance in his creative ideas.
